Technician replacing an iPad battery at a professional repair workstation in Perth

Fully charged at breakfast. Flat by lunch. Hunting for the charger again by mid-afternoon.

If that’s your iPad, the battery is wearing out, and an iPad battery replacement is the fix. It costs a lot less than a new iPad, and it can make an old one feel useful again.

At Yes Tech Repairs, we fix phones, tablets and laptops from our shop in the Perth CBD. In this guide, you’ll find 2026 prices for every iPad model, the warning signs to watch for, and an honest look at Apple, local repairers and DIY.

Can an iPad battery be changed?

Absolutely. An iPad battery can be changed. It’s just not something you can pop out yourself. The battery is glued inside, under the screen, so the screen comes off first. Apple and independent repair shops both do this job, and a fresh battery gives your iPad a new lease on life.

Here’s why that matters: the battery usually gives out long before the rest of the iPad. The screen, storage and chip are often still in great shape.

iPad battery replacement cost in Perth

Out of warranty, Apple charges $165 to $339 to replace an iPad battery, depending on the model. Independent repair shops usually charge less, typically between $99 and $250. Got AppleCare+ and a battery below 80% capacity? Apple will replace it at no extra charge.

Here’s how the cost of an iPad battery replacement stacks up for each model:

iPad model Apple (out of warranty) Typical independent repairer*
iPad (7th, 8th, 9th gen) $165 $99–$149
iPad (10th gen) and iPad (A16) $205 $99–$149
iPad mini (5th gen, 6th gen, A17 Pro) $205 $129–$199
iPad Air (4th gen, 5th gen, 11-inch M2 and M3) $205 $129–$249
iPad Air 11-inch (M4) $219 $129–$249
iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4) $259 $129–$249
iPad Pro 11-inch (1st to 3rd gen) and 12.9-inch (3rd to 5th gen) $205 $149–$249
iPad Pro 11-inch (4th gen) $259 $149–$249
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th gen) $309 $149–$249

What changes the price

Your model matters most. Newer and bigger iPads have larger batteries and thin screens that are glued down tightly, so they take more time and care to open.

The battery you choose matters too. A quality battery costs more than a cheap one, and it’s worth the difference.

Your iPad’s condition can also change the price. A swollen battery, a bent frame, water damage or a past DIY attempt all make the job harder. When you compare changing iPad battery cost between shops, ask three things: what battery they use, how long the warranty is, and whether they charge to look at it.

Signs it’s time to replace your iPad battery

If your iPad can’t get through a normal day anymore, it’s time to replace the iPad battery. Look out for these signs:

  • It drains fast. A bit of streaming or homework, and it’s already low.
  • It dies with charge left. It shows 20% or 30%, then switches off.
  • It’s stuck to the charger. It only works when plugged in.
  • Charging drags. It takes ages to fill up, or stalls at the same percentage.
  • It runs hot. Reading or browsing shouldn’t make it warm.
  • The screen is lifting. A gap around the edge usually means the battery is swelling.

A swollen battery needs attention straight away. Stop charging the iPad, don’t press on the screen, and get it checked as soon as you can.

How to check your iPad’s battery health

On newer iPads, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. You’ll see the battery’s maximum capacity, its cycle count, and when it was made and first used.

Maximum capacity is the key number. It shows how much charge your battery holds now, compared with when it was new.

iPad Battery Health screen showing maximum capacity, cycle count and optimised battery charging

According to Apple, this screen is only on these models:

  • iPad Pro (M4 and M5)
  • iPad Air (M2, M3 and M4)
  • iPad mini (A17 Pro)
  • iPad (A16)

Got an older iPad, like a 9th or 10th generation? You won’t find this screen. Go by the signs above instead, or ask a repair shop to test the battery for you.

The cycle count tells you how hard your battery has worked. One cycle means using 100% of its charge in total, even if that’s spread over a few days. Apple designs iPad batteries to keep up to 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 full cycles. Once yours drops below that, you’ll feel it in how quickly it runs out.

Your options: Apple, a local repairer or DIY

You’ve got three ways to get a new battery in your iPad. Here’s how they compare.

Apple iPad battery change

If you have AppleCare+ and your battery is below 80%, start with Apple. The battery service is covered at no extra charge. Apple’s one-year warranty also covers a faulty battery, but not one that has simply worn out.

Out of warranty, an Apple iPad battery change costs $165 to $339, depending on the model. You can book at an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider, or post your iPad in. Posting may add a shipping fee.

Worth knowing: Apple may give you a replacement iPad instead of fixing yours. If that happens, you’ll need to restore your data from a backup.

A local Perth repairer

A local repair shop is a strong choice for most out-of-warranty iPads. You’ll usually pay less than at Apple, and if the part’s in stock, you may get your iPad back the same day. You also get to talk directly to the person doing the work.

Before you book, ask:

  1. What battery will you use?
  2. How long is the warranty?
  3. How long will my model take?
  4. What happens if the screen cracks while you’re opening it?

A good repairer will answer all four without hesitation. See our repair services here.

Replacing an iPad battery yourself

DIY kits are cheaper upfront, but this is one of the trickiest repairs to try at home. To replace an iPad battery, you have to heat the glue, lift a fragile screen and work around thin cables. One slip can crack the screen, tear a cable or damage the battery.

A damaged lithium-ion battery can swell, smoke or catch fire. And a cracked screen turns a battery job into a much bigger bill. Leave DIY to people with real repair experience, working on an older iPad they can afford to risk.

Option Typical cost Turnaround Battery type Warranty Best for
Apple $165–$339 ($0 with AppleCare+ below 80%) Varies; longer if posted Genuine Apple 90 days or the rest of your Apple warranty AppleCare+ owners and newer iPads
Local repairer Around $99–$250 for most models Can be same day if parts are in stock Varies, so ask first Varies by shop Out-of-warranty iPads
DIY Parts only Depends on you Varies by supplier None on your own work Experienced repairers only

Replacing an iPad Pro battery

An iPad Pro battery can definitely be replaced. It’s a more delicate job than on a standard iPad, and the price reflects that.

The latest iPad Pro models are remarkably thin. The 13-inch M5 is just 5.1 mm. Their large Tandem OLED screens are glued firmly to the frame, so getting the screen off safely takes skill, controlled heat and the right tools. The batteries are bigger and pricier too.

That’s why Apple’s iPad Pro prices sit at the top of the range: $309 for the 11-inch (M4 and M5) and $339 for the 13-inch. Parts for the newest models can be harder for repair shops to source, so prices vary more. Choose someone experienced, and ask about their screen-crack policy before you hand it over.

What happens during a battery replacement in an iPad

Here’s what a battery replacement in an iPad looks like, step by step:

  1. Check and quote. The technician confirms your model, tests the battery, checks for other problems, and gives you a price before starting.
  2. Back up your data. The battery swap doesn’t touch your photos or files, but a fresh backup to iCloud or your computer is always smart.
  3. Take the screen off. The glue is gently warmed, and the screen is carefully lifted away.
  4. Remove the old battery. It’s unplugged and eased out from its glue.
  5. Fit the new battery. The new one goes in with fresh glue and is plugged back in.
  6. Test and seal. Charging, the screen and touch are all checked before the screen is sealed back down.

Timing depends on your model and whether the part is in stock. Ask for a time estimate with your quote.

Is it worth replacing your iPad battery?

For most iPads, a new battery is the smart move. If everything else works, you’re paying a fraction of what a new iPad costs.

Replacing the battery makes sense if:

  • your iPad still gets iPadOS updates
  • the screen, charging port and buttons all work
  • the repair costs a lot less than a similar replacement iPad

Skip it if your iPad no longer gets updates, has other problems, or the repair would cost close to what the iPad is worth. In that case, put the money towards a new one.

Making a new battery for your iPad last longer

Look after your new battery for your iPad, and it’ll look after you. Here’s how:

  • Keep it cool. Never leave it in a hot car, especially in a Perth summer. Heat wears batteries out faster.
  • Don’t let it go flat. Charge it before it hits 0%.
  • Use the 80% Limit if you have it. It’s on the iPad Pro (M4 and later), iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad (A16). Find it under Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
  • Use a good charger. Stick with a reliable USB-C or Lightning charger and cable.

FAQs

Why is my iPad battery draining so fast all of a sudden?

Sudden battery drain usually comes from software, not the battery itself. A recent iPadOS update, apps running in the background, high screen brightness or a weak Wi-Fi signal can all drain power quickly. Restart your iPad and check Settings > Battery to see which apps use the most. If the drain continues, the battery is likely worn.

Is it safe to leave my iPad charging overnight?

Yes. Your iPad is designed to manage its own charging, so leaving it plugged in overnight is fine. Heat is the real risk, so charge it on a hard, open surface rather than under a pillow or on the bed. On newer models, turning on the 80% Limit also reduces long-term battery wear.

Can I keep using my iPad while I wait for a battery replacement?

Yes, as long as the battery isn’t swollen. Turn on Low Power Mode in Settings > Battery to stretch each charge, lower the screen brightness, and keep a charger handy. If you notice the screen lifting, the case bulging, or the iPad getting unusually hot, stop using it and get it checked straight away.

What happens to my old iPad battery after it’s replaced?

A professional repairer should recycle it safely. Never put an old lithium-ion battery in your household bin. Apple warns that throwing batteries in the bin is dangerous for the environment, and damaged batteries can also start fires in rubbish trucks. Ask your repairer how they dispose of old batteries before you book.
